Pisces Season: We are all Anglerfish

If you have been captivated by the life and death of this icon, this black sea monster, you are not alone. For those who haven’t been bawling their eyes out over this underwater legend, this deep-sea queen made her way from 1,500 meters below the ocean’s surface this week all the way to the light of the sun, a first-ever occurrence.

I can think of no better symbol/mascot/aspirational metaphor for Pisces season than this dark beauty. So let’s dive in.

Our queen swimming to the surface.

Pisces is the last sign in the zodiac and the wheel of the year. It can be hard to wrap our Western brains around the idea of an end just as we feel the glimmer of spring on the horizon. That’s why Pisces’ biggest lesson to us is that the end is the beginning is the beginning is the end. Pisces rules the 12th and final house, and if we look at the zodiac wheel as chapters of our lives, then this is it, baby. This is the end.

Is this what the anglerfish saw as she climbed towards the surface?

The 12th house is the zodiac culmination of all of our work in this lifetime, and also, all of our work and bullshit from past lifetimes. It’s this beautiful, liminal space where we find respite to pause, reflect, and perhaps do better next time around. Where Scorpio gives us the opportunity for transformation and rebirth in this lifetime, Pisces say, nah- let’s dissolve into the cosmos and do that on the astral plane.

Of course, the 12th house can also represent more mundane things like dreaming, spirituality, interconnectedness, secrets, and marginalized parts of our society. Ruled by the planet Neptune, it’s the sign and season that beckons us to both dissociate and reunite.

Pisces is the least incarnate of zodiac, half here and half in the spirit realm, which is why they are so empathic, intuitive, and fully witchy. Like the water they dissolve into, they are the most mutable, the most boundaryless, the most capable of carrying wisdom and memory.

I imagine the journey of this very special anglerfish to be much like ours.

We strive and bump around in the dark most of our lives with just a little luminescence to guide us. We cling to the dark, but dream of a place warmer and brighter. Then one day we say, fuck it, we’re going to find that big, bright orb we keep hearing about.

We know the journey will cost us something, that we won’t return the same or at all. But for a glimpse of something greater, we will risk it all. We are all just anglerfish dreaming of something better, hoping that there is something on the other end of this darkness.

Swim little sea monsters, swim.

Questions this Pisces season asks of us:

  • What can we surrender and let go of in order to grow more authentically this time around?

  • What emotions and wounds need to flow through us in order to start anew in Aries season?

  • What parts of you have died and been reborn over the last year?

  • When the old world dies away, what will you dream into this new one?
